Po raz 50. rozdano nagrody Annie, najważniejsze wyróżnienia doceniające produkcje animowane. Głównym zwycięzcą okazał się „Pinokio”, firmowany przez Guillermo del Toro. Wśród niezależnych animacji zwyciężył „Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”. Obie produkcje zmierzą się w walce o Oscara, ale faworytem jest „Pinokio”.
Branża animacji nie ma wątpliwości i przyznała „Pinokiu” swoją doroczną nagrodę dla najlepszej pełnometrażowej produkcji fabularnej. W sumie zaś film zdobył pięć nagród, w tym za reżyserię podpisaną wspólnie przez Guillermo del Toro i Marka Gustafsona. Doceniono też muzykę (Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, del Toro i Patrick McHale), scenografię (Curt Enderle i Guy Davis) oraz za projekt postaci (Tucker Barrie). Na gali wręczenia nagród Annie Guillermo del Toro przyjechał wprost z rozdania nagród Gildii Producentów Amerykańskich, gdzie „Pinokio” otrzymał nagrodę za najlepszą animację. Twórca zauważył, że ceremonia Annie była jedynym miejscem, w którym nie musiał podkreślać, że animacja jest medium, a nie gatunkiem. „O Pinokiu mogę powiedzieć, że wykonali go artyści, a animatorzy byli traktowani jak obsada, a nie technicy”.
„Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”, również film poklatkowy, zdobył Annie za najlepszy niezależny film fabularny, a także dwie inne nagrody. Jenny Slate zdobyła nagrodę za aktorstwo głosowe za rolę Marcela, podczas gdy Slate, Dean Fleischer Camp, Nick Paley i Elizabeth Holm zdobyli nagrodę za scenariusz.
Apple TV+ i BBC otrzymały cztery nagrody Annie za animowany film krótkometrażowy „The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse”, w tym za najlepszą produkcję specjalną i reżyserię dla projektu telewizyjnego/medialnego. 34-minutowy film wyreżyserowali Peter Baynton i Charlie Mackesy, autor książki, na podstawie której powstał film.
Cztery nagrody zdobyła antologia „Love, Death + Robot”. Dwie nagrody za animacje zdobył też „Avatar: Istota wody”, w tym za animację w filmie fabularnym. Scenarzysta i reżyser oraz dyrektor kreatywny Pixar Pete Docter, płodny twórca seriali telewizyjnych Craig McCracken i nieżyjąca już Evelyn Lambart, znana ze swoich filmów krótkometrażowych, zostali uhonorowani nagrodą Winsor McCay Award za całokształt twórczości.
