Znani są już także laureaci Independent Spirit Awards, nagród przyznawanych produkcjom i twórcom kina niezależnego. Nagrodę dla najlepszego filmu zdobyło „Poprzednie życie” w reżyserii Celine Song.
Nagrody kina niezależnego zdobyli też twórcy filmów „American Fiction” (najlepszy aktor Jeffrey Wright, scenariusz) i „Obsesja” (najlepszy scenariusz), ale najwięcej wyróżnień powędrowało do osób pracujących przy „Przesileniu zimowym”, bo doceniono dwie kreacje aktorskie i zdjęcia. Za debiut filmowy doceniono „A Thousand and One”. Za najlepszy film zagraniczny uznano „Anatomię upadku”, a wśród filmów dokumentalnych doceniono „Cztery córki”.
W kategoriach telewizyjnych triumfowały "Awantura" i "The Last of Us". Pierwszy z wymienionych uznano za najlepszy serial fabularny. Wyróżniono także grającą główną rolę Ali Wong. "The Last of Us" wygrało w kategoriach "rola drugoplanowa" (Nick Offerman) oraz "przełomowa rola" (Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Za najlepszą obsadę uznano aktorów występujących w sitcomie "Jury Duty".
