„Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą” w Cannes 2020


Organizatorzy Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Filmowego w Cannes zaprezentowali program sekcji „Cannes Classics 2020”. W gronie tym znalazł się film Wojciecha Jerzego Hasa „Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą”.

Tegoroczna lista obejmuje 25 filmów fabularnych i siedem filmów dokumentalnych. W gronie najważniejszych tytułów obecnych w tej sekcji wymienia się „Spragnionych miłości” Wong Kar-waia, którzy obchodzą  w tym roku 25. rocznicę premiery. Jest też dzieło Jean-Luca Godarda „Do utraty tchu” i wielka „Przygoda” Michelangelo Antonioniego. Oba te filmy kończą w tym roku 60 lat. Cannes uhonoruje też Federico Felliniego, w setną rocznicę jego urodzin. Na jego część pokazane zostaną dwa filmy mistrza, La strada” i „Luci del varietà” oraz dokument „Fellini of the Spirits” w reżyserii Anselma dell'Olio.

Wśród wydarzeń „Cannes Classics 2020” znalazł się też odrestaurowany cyfrowo zgodnie ze wskazówkami Witolda Sobocińskiego film Wojciecha Jerzego Hasa pt. „Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą”. Ta wersja filmu dedykowana jest polskiemu operatorowi, który zmarł w 2018 roku. Has zrealizował ten imponujący film bazując na prozie Brunona Schulza. Surrealistyczna opowieść do dziś budzi podziw i zachwyca swoim rozmachem oraz inscenizacją, choć po premierze na Hasa spadło sporo słów krytyki. „Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą” zdobyło w 1973 roku Nagrodę Jury 26. Festiwalu w Cannes, choć władza w Polsce nie wyraziła zgody na wysłanie filmu na festiwal. Samodzielna decyzja Hasa ściągnęła na niego gniew zwierzchników i zakaz reżyserii na kilka lat.

Cannes Classics zaprezentuje też kilka mniej znanych filmów. Wśród nich będzie „Friendship’s Death” w reżyserii Petera Wollena, w którym przełomową rolę zagrała w 1987 roku Tilda Swinton. Będzie też „The Story of a Three-Day Pass”, debiut reżyserski Melvina Van Peeblesa. Wśród propozycji dokumentalnych znalazły się: „Wim Wenders, Desperado” w reżyserii Erica Friedlera i Andreasa Frege’a, „Charlie Chaplin, The Genius of Liberty” w reżyserii François Aymé i Yvesa Jeulanda, poświęcony Bruce’owi Lee film Bao Nguyena „Be Water” oraz „Belushi” w reżyserii R.J. Cutlera, który opowiada historię Johna Belushi.

Ponieważ festiwal w Cannes odwołał swoją tegoroczną fizyczną edycję, tegoroczna selekcja Cannes Classics zostanie zaprezentowana na festiwalu Lumiere w Lyonie w dniach 10-18 października oraz na specjalnych pokazach w Cannes w dniach 23-26 listopada.

“In the Mood for Love” (2000, Hong Kong), Wong Kar-wai
The 4k restoration of the film made from the original negative was lead by Criterion and L’Immagine Ritrovata under the supervision of Wong Kar-wai. French theatrical distribution: The Jokers Films, date of release: December 2, 2020.

Friendship’s Death (1987, U.K.), Peter Wollen
Presented by the British Film Institute (BFI). The 4K remastering by the BFI National Archive was from the original Standard 16mm colour negative. The remastering was undertaken in collaboration with the film’s producer, Rebecca O’Brien and cinematographer, Witold Stok.

“The Story of a Three-Day Pass” (1967, France), Melvin Van Peebles
Presented by IndieCollect and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The restoration of the film was funded by a grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The original film elements were found by the IndieCollect team during its inventory of Melvin Van Peebles’ New York apartment and storage facility.

“July Rain” (1966, Russia), Marlen Khutsiev
Presented by Mosfilm Cinema Concern. 4K digital restoration done by Mosfilm Cinema Concern and produced by Karen Shakhnazarov.

“Quand les femmes ont pris la colère” (1977, France), Soizick Chappedelaine and René Vautier. Presented by Ciaofilm. The film was scanned in 4K and restored in 2K from the original 16mm negative. French theatrical distribution in 2021. DVD / Blu-ray release by Les Mutins de Pangée and in VOD on Cinémutins in 2021.

“Get Out Your Handkerchiefs” (1977, 1h50, France), Bertrand Blier
Presented by TF1 Studio and Orange Studio / CAPAC. 4K Restoration from the picture negative and the French magnetic soud track, supervised by Bertrand Blier. Digital works carried out by Eclair laboratory in 2019.

“Hester Street” (1973, U.S.), Joan Micklin Silver
Presented by Cohen Film Collection. 4K scanning and restoration work was carried out by DuArt Media Services in New York.

“Who’s Singing Over There?” (1980, Serbia), Slobodan Šijan
Presented by Malavida Films. Restoration from the picture and sound negative. French theatrical distribution by Malavida Films planned for Oct. 21, 2020.

“Black Silk” (1961, Thailand), R.D. Pestonji
Presented by Film Archive Thailand (Public Organization). 4K Scan and 4K Restoration from the original 35mm negative (preserved by Film Archive Thailand). Restoration made and financed by Film Archive Thailand and Thai Ministry of Culture. Mastered in 4K for Digital Projection.

“New Year Sacrifice” (1956, China), Hu Sang
Presented by Shanghai International Film Festival and China Film Archive. 4K restoration made by China Film Archive. Co-financed by Shanghai International Film Festival and Jaeger-LeCoultre.

“Upthrown Stone” (1968, Hungary), Sándor Sára
Presented by National Film Institute. The 4K digital restoration was carried out by the Hungarian Film Institute. Collaborating partner: Hungarian Society of Cinematographers.

“Neige” (1981, France), Juliet Berto and Jean-Henri Roger
Presented by JHR Films. The 4K restoration was carried out at L’Image Retrouvée laboratory in Bologna and in Paris.
